Mardi Gras Fun Facts

Happy Mardi Gras. This year Mardi Gras will be held on February 13, 2023. Mardi Gras falls before Ash Wednesday the first day of lint. Mardi Gras has similarities to the Roman festival. Once Christianity came to Rome religious leaders tried to banned pagan traditions with Christian traditions, which resulted in people drinking, dancing, and partying before lent begin.

There are multiple parades during the Carnival Celebration. The largest parade takes place the last day of Mardi Gras season.

When the parades are happening, people are usually outside enjoying the parade, passing out beads and listening to live bands.

King Cakes colors are purple which means justice, green for growth, and gold meaning prosperity and wealth. Tradition states if one finds the baby in a king cake he or she becomes king and queen for the evening.

Float riders must wear mask and they throw beads or other trinkets in the crowd. Throwing beads shows a small token of appreciation for the crowd. Cities that partake in Mardi Gras are Alabama, Mississippi and Florida.

My husband and I celebrated our friend's 13 year Wedding Anniversary in NewOrleans in January. Throughout the French Quarters you can see the various Mardi Gras decorations. Souvenir shops were full of Mardi Gras paraphernalia and King Cake recipes and cake mixes.
